CPAP and AutoPAP devices
It's common to hear "CPAP" used as a catch-all term for sleep apnea therapy, but there is a major functional difference between a standard CPAP and an AutoPAP (APAP) machine. The simplest way to think about it is: Constant vs. Variable.
Understanding your therapy options
We offer a range of specialized services tailored to meet your individual needs. Our approach is focused on understanding and responding to what you require, providing effective and practical solutions.
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure)
How it works: This machine delivers a single, fixed pressure of air all night long. This pressure level is determined during your titration study. Whether you are in deep sleep, light sleep, or sleeping on your side versus your back, the pressure stays exactly the same. Best for: Patients with straightforward sleep apnea who find a single, steady pressure comfortable and effective.
AutoPAP (Automatic Positive Airway Pressure)
How it works: An AutoPAP uses an algorithm to sense your breathing in real-time. It automatically increases the pressure when it detects a collapse in your airway and lowers it when you are breathing clearly. The experience: It provides a range (e.g., 4–20 cmH2O). If you only need minimal pressure, that’s all you get. Best for: Patients who experience varying sleep positions, or those whose sleep apnea severity changes throughout the night.
Which device is right for you?
The choice between CPAP and AutoPAP depends on your individual needs and your sleep study results. Our specialists at Sweet Dreams Sleep Center will help you understand your diagnosis and guide you toward the best solution for your sleep health.
Constant or variable pressure
The key difference between CPAP and AutoPAP devices lies in how they deliver air pressure. One provides a steady stream, while the other intelligently adjusts to your breathing needs.
CPAP: The "steady stream"
A standard CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) is like a fan set to one speed. The benefit: It is simple and consistent. Once your doctor finds the "perfect" pressure to keep your airway open, the machine stays at that exact level all night long. The feel: Some people love the predictability. However, others find it a bit "strong" when they are just trying to fall asleep, as the pressure never drops.
AutoPAP: The "smart responder"
An AutoPAP (Automatic Positive Airway Pressure) is like an AC unit that turns itself up or down based on the temperature. The benefit: It "listens" to your breathing. If you roll onto your back (where snoring is usually worse), it automatically nudges the pressure up. If you roll onto your side and breathe easily, it relaxes the pressure. The feel: Most patients find this more comfortable because the machine isn't "pushing" hard when you don't need it to. It’s also great if your needs change because of things like allergies, weight fluctuations, or alcohol consumption.
